We match adults who want to upgrade their literacy skills (English or math) with suitably skilled volunteer tutors. We provide our tutor-learner pairs with lesson plans, learning resources and ongoing support. At given time we manage more than 100 tutor learner matches. Approximately two thirds of our learners are new to Canada. Approximately 75% of all our learners (those born here as well as those born elsewhere) need to upgrade their literacy skills in order to enhance their employability. Many of our learners are trying to get a college education. They may have dropped out of high school, or maybe they graduated but didn’t do well enough in English or math to get into, say, a trades or healthcare program. Others can’t afford the time or money to return to school but have to improve their literacy skills if they hope to find a job that pays enough to support them and perhaps a family.

We need you!  The Volunteer Tutor Literacy Program is seeking volunteers.  Are you looking for a chance to help develop the literacy or numeracy skills in an adult learner?  Or an opportunity to give back to our community?  Our program, the VLTP, is based at Okanagan College.  We are needing volunteers to work one on one with adult learners who are wanting to improve their own literacy or numeracy skills.  Your commitment will be 1 to 2 hours per week, with your schedule to be determined by you and your learner.  Tutoring can be done remotely over Zoom, Skype, Facetime, etc. or face to face at the college or another public meeting place.  To start, you will attend a short intake meeting, followed by training, and then you can begin meeting with your learner.  If you are interested, please call or email Rene at: 250-762-5445 local 4244 or rdahms@okanagan.bc.ca or Cathy at: 250-762-5445 local 4555 or cudala@okanagan.bc.ca
NITEO exists to support young readers to obtain critical literacy skills in order to build bright and hopeful futures. We do this through local and global initiatives. Locally, we run a Family Reading Program for newcomer/refugee families in Kelowna. Volunteers meet with families once/week during our Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions for an afterschool program focused on developing literacy skills through group activities, games, and time spent reading together. Globally, we collect donations of gently used children's books to ship to partner organizations to establish community libraries in Uganda. We also provide literacy focused microgrants to partner organizations to further the work of literacy equity for all.
